Avita Laptops Blend Lifestyle with Technology (Techfluence 2020)

Lifestyle and design are Avita’s guiding principle when it comes to their products – starting with their Pura laptop and Magus II 2-in-1 tablet.
Pura is their 14” Windows laptop with textured finish in 5 attractive colors. It looks like something a hip millenial would use at a coffee shop to run their virtual business – yet looks conservative enough to take to an office meeting.
It’s thin and light (at 2.84 lbs) with a very sturdy hinge mechanism. The display is an IPS screen with full HD resolution (1920×1080) so you could probably color correct your photos on it if you happen to be on location without an external monitor. It’s got a great battery life of up to 8 hours and backlit keyboard if you’re in a dark place.
Technology
The current model uses AMD’s A9 9420e processor (1.8GHz clock speed, 2.7GHz turbo) and AMD Radeon R5 graphics. You get 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage (expandable via microSD slot, which accepts up to 128 GB max).
There are 3 USB ports including:
- 1x USB 3.0 Type C
- 1x USB 3.0 Type A
- 1x USB 2.0 Type A
Additional input/outputs: mini HDMI (for which you get an HDMI to mini HDMI adapter) & 3.5mm headphone jack. Wireless networks include WiFi B/G/N/AC and Bluetooth 4.2. All this at a cost of $499 MSRP.
Magus II (2-in-1 Tablet)
The Magus II tablet docks into an included keyboard for laptop-like functionality. It comes in faux leather folio case with a choice of 4 colors. Like the Pura, it looks like a tool used by a modern professional, but the insides are somewhat different.
It has a 10.1” display with a resolution of 1280×800. Battery life is a respectable 6 hours, which is a good trade-off for its super light weight at just 1.25 lbs.
Technology
This unit utilizes an Intel Pentium 5000 processor (1.2GHz clock speed, 2.7GHz Turbo) with integrated Intel UHD 605 GPU. You get 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage (expandable via microSD slot, which accepts up to 128 GB max).
Input/outputs include: 1x USB 3.0 port, mini HDMI & 3.5mm headphone jack. Wireless networks include WiFi B/G/N/AC and Bluetooth 4.2. All this at a cost of $249 MSRP.
Shipping and support
Avita is a consumer technology brand (offering laptops, IOT) based in Hong Kong and is about a year old. Their product offerings began in Asia, and moved westward into the UK, India, and Ireland. Interestingly, they have a design center based in Taiwan.
For the USA, they’ve taken the direct-to-consumer approach, so you can purchase their products online. We’re told they have major distribution sites world-wide, so your shipping wait times shouldn’t be too long (in other words, your product is shipping from the Americas, not from Asia – so it won’t take 4 weeks.)
Tech support is local (based in Canada), and you can contact them with a phone call or chat with an online agent if you need help. In case there’s a need for repair, Avita tells us they’ll ship out a loaner unit for you to work with while yours is getting fixed – and they’ll pay shipping both ways. Nice!
