Luba 3 AWD Robotic Lawn Mower

The Luba 3 AWD is Mammotion’s new flagship all-wheel-drive robotic lawn mower that can be categorized as “set-and-forget”. Because once you set the boundaries of your lawn (or lawns) and tell it what to do (like set a mowing schedule), it will manage itself with minimal interaction from you.
There’s a lot of tech built in to do the job thoroughly and safely, as in detecting objects (it will go around them), avoiding falls (like steps), planning/mapping for the most efficient cut, operating in rain or shine (IPX6) and a lot more.
There are currently 6 models in this line (“H” for “High” model):
- 5000 / 5000H – covers 5,000m2 (1.25 acres) lawns
- 3000 / 3000H – covers 3,000m2 (0.75 acres) lawns
- 1500 / 1500H – covers 1,500m2 (0.37 acres) lawns
Model numbers correlate to area coverage (and thus battery size, discussed below) while Standard or High (e.g. 1500 or 1500H) versions refer to the grass cutting height (also discussed below).
It’s worth noting that the H models are a North American variant only (at least at the time of this writing).
Navigation
To get around in the most efficient way (and safely), 3 positioning and detection systems (a world’s first) are used in conjunction.
- 360 degree LIDAR – an all-seeing blue eye on top of the LUBA 3 AWD that uses laser distance measuring to generate 3 dimensional maps for navigation
- NetRTK – GPS on steroids. It’s accurate to 1 cm for location correction and doesn’t need a base station to do it
- Dual camera AI – uses 2 x 1080p cameras to judge depth
Using these technologies together makes for smart collision avoidance and efficient planning and terrain reading – without getting confused. It also allows the system to work at night, which can save on electricity costs (discussed below under power).
NOTE: the 1500 models do not include NetRTK technology.
Cutting
Using 2 rotating discs with 6 blades on each, the mower cuts at a width of 15.7 inches (40cm), which is about a foot and a third. You can physically adjust the cutting height to your liking within the following range:
- Standard models: 1 – 2.7 inches (25-70mm)
- H (High) models: 2.2 – 4 inches (55-100mm)
What’s really impressive is the the terrain it can handle, mowing at near impossible slopes (up to 38.6 degrees) that can be dangerous for humans should they slip and fall. The underlying design almost feels like an off-road rally car with an “enhanced” suspension system and grippy wheels that look like it can manage through wet and slippery terrain if necessary.
It can fit through gaps as narrow as 2.3 feet (70cm) and handle a huge variety of things (that aren’t grass) to decide what it’s going to do, like in open fields littered with large stones, shrubs, trees – or more urban objects like firepits, dad’s car parts, kids toys, etc.
According to the literature, the mow rate is 7,000 square feet (650m2) per hour for the 5000 and 3000 models while the 1500 model covers 4300 square feet (400m2) per hour.
Power Management and Coverage
Moving, cutting, charging, thinking… all this requires quite a bit of muscle to control, and the Luba 3 AWD doesn’t skimp. Two high-torque 165W motors auto-adjusts its rpm (mowing) speed and power depending on grass density. Think about that… grass density! This means it more or less detects how thick the grass is growing!
Models differ in the area coverage due, in part, to the battery size:
- 5000 / 5000H (5,000m2 / 1.25acres) – 15Ah Li-ion battery
- 3000 / 3000H (3,000m2 / 0.75acres) – 12Ah Li-ion battery
- 1500 / 1500H (1,500m2 / 0.37acres) – 9.4Ah Li-ion battery
When power runs low, the mower returns to its charging station to refill the battery. To help save money on electricity costs, Smart Charging lets you set recharge hours to align with your local power company’s off-peak prices (when they charge less).
Plus, it’s possible to extend the battery’s lifetime with Smart Battery Management, which lets you charge up the battery to something less than 100% (a practice used in laptops, which also use Li-ion technology. They’re typically set at an 80% charge).
Spino S1 Pro – Robotic Pool Cleaner

Pool owners will have an easier time keeping things clean with the robotic Spino S1 Pro pool cleaner. While the automated cleaning is a god-send, the real party trick is the charging station. The dock is a technical marvel that can somehow align and lift out the robot cleaner from the water to charge itself. There’s no need for you to lift it out yourself.
The S1 Pro can cover up to 3200 square feet while communicating up to 10 meters underwater. It makes me wonder what kind of technology it uses for that because it’s almost certainly not Bluetooth (which has a hard time penetrating even a few inches of water).
The S1 Pro has 23 sensors (18 for the non-Pro version) to recognize and bypass obstacles, detect when it needs to do a deeper clean, speed up or slow down, etc.
It has a suction power of 6800 GPH (Gallons Per Hour) (or 25800 liters/hour) using 5 brushless motors, which is powerful enough to lift grime, algae and surface scum off any surface, from fiberglass to vinyl, tile and concrete.
After the robot does the hard work, you simply need to toss out the crud accumulated in the filter basket.
