Game: Kristala
Developer: Astral Clocktower Studios

You play as a magic cat warrior in the land of Kristala in this dark fantasy/action RPG. Your goal is to set out on a hero’s journey to uncover the source of a dark curse that has besieged your world.

Players familiar with third person action games will enjoy Kristala, as it has similar vibes to Assassin’s Creed, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne. In fact, the studio name comes from the Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower boss fight in Bloodborne.

Magic casting is a big focus of the game, and you’ll choose a character from between 6 cat clans, with each possessing different types of magical abilities. Build up your character and master your clan’s magic arts to help you beat the boss at the end of each level. Your goal is to get through all 6 shard guardian bosses to complete your journey.

The game encourages exploration, with different ways to progress throughout each level. First timers can expect 1.5 hours to 2 hours of gameplay while a speedrun by a gamer experienced in this genre finishing in around 30 minutes.

INTERVIEW (edited for brevity)

Astral Clocktower Studios is an indie studio founded in 2018 with a core team based in central Pennsylvania. They have, however, an international team of people from as far away as Brasil & Greece. Initially developed in Unreal Engine 4, Kristala has been re-developed in Unreal Engine 5 for improved gameplay.

Availability

Kristala is developed for PC and console, with the first level demo available on Steam. There’s currently a Kickstarter in progress, with goal-met funds going towards development of an early access version of the game with an ETA of Q2 of 2024.

Once full funding is attained, the studio estimates a year to final version completion.
