Moen U IoT Shower Controls
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Moen U is Moen’s modern take on shower controls that saves you time and stops water waste. This smart controller runs the hot water tap and pauses it when the exact temperature you want is reached. This not only saves water, but also signals when you can jump in, saving you time from waiting and wondering whether the water’s hot enough. And that’s only part of what this system can do.
The user interface/controller in the shower is waterproof and lets you:
- Select the degree of temperature by pressing up or down.
- Pick the showerhead(s) you wish to use if you have more than one.
- Save shower settings so you can recall it at a touch of a button.
As with most connected devices, this one comes with a downloadable app that offers some interesting options. There’s a timer setting that lets you, for example, set a 10 minute countdown before shutting off the water – or bring the temperature down a few degrees. It’s a great way of teaching yourself to ration water or to warn yourself that you’re going to be late for work if you don’t get a move on.
The controller is A/C powered with a backup battery should there be a blackout. If electricity does go down, the backup battery will kick in so you can finish your shower. It’s good for a handful of showers until the electricity starts running again.
There are several components to this system starting with the controller. This is the brain that connects to cloud services via wifi and can be replaced if you ever want to upgrade in the future. The rest of the system that includes the backup battery and pipes are hidden behind the wall; a money saving measure that saves you from having to tear down the walls. Simply replace the controller, which is mounted on the showering side.
The Moen U shower controls are not available at retail box stores, but you can find them online (e.g. Amazon) and at wholesale plumbing supply stores. Prices are approximate, but are slated to be:
$2200 for the controller and a 4 valve system
$1160 for the controller and a 2 valve system
And don’t worry about upgrading the firmware – it’s updated automatically without any action necessary on your part.
